Sir:-

I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acquaint

you, for the information of the Earl of Elgin that the

Archbishop of Canterbury having formally applied for

His Majesty's Warrant authorizing the consecration of

the Venerable Horace McClure Eyre Price, M.A., to be

Bishop of the Church of England in the Province of

Fuh-Kien in the Empire of China, steps are being taken

to comply with His Grace's request.

It appears that the present Bishop of Victoria,

Hongkong holds from the Archbishop of Canterbury a Com-

mission to exercise jurisdiction in the provinces of

Fuh-Kien and Chekiang, south of the 28th. degree of
